What is Local Link Building?
Local link building is the process of building relevant and / or locally relevant links to a business website. The goal is to drive traffic and users to the site and help them rank better in local searches and related map packs.
How many local links do I need?
Most local businesses don't need tons of links to rank in local search. Check SERP reviews for any local queries in Keyword Explorer and you'll rarely see businesses with more than 150 referral domains on the front page.
How to create local links.
Like any link building, local link building requires research, hard work, perseverance and creativity. Here are nine link building strategies to get you started:
- Get links from other ranking sites.
- Get links from your competitors.
- Recover lost links.
- Create relevant content locally.
- Get local references.
- Follow other local link opportunities.
- Claim unlinked dhikr.
- Buy companies, or at least their websites.
- Add internal links
1. Get links from other ranking sites.
This is a tactic that is sometimes called barren SEO. Just search for some of your related terms in Google and try to get links from the sites that appear in the results.
You may not find links from competitors, but look for sites of any aggregator or directory type. People use these types of sites when they are shopping for a company. You can usually get a list of them just by signing up and adding your business. It's a quick and easy way to make sure you're on the set and get a direct business value
2. Get links from your competitors.
If you look at the overlap of links from competitors' sites, there are probably plenty of opportunities for contextual and locally relevant links. You can easily check it from the link intersect. Just add your site and your competitors to the tool and you'll see which sites link to your competitors (but not you).
3. Recover lost links.
Websites change over the years, so you will often have links to pages that no longer exist. By redirecting the old version of your pages to the current version, you will regain those lost links and their value. Here's how:
- Paste your domain into Site Explorer.
- Go to Contacts to report the best
- Add "404 not found" HTTP response filter.
4. Create relevant content locally.
Content creation is the process of finding topics to engage your target audience, then planning, creating and publishing content about those topics. For local content, think of content that is relevant to your business and useful to your audience.
You can pick topics such as "What is the best type of grass for your area?"
While it's unlikely that this type of content will naturally attract a lot of links, it's easy to make links via email.
5. Get local references.
We've already seen some of these opportunities when using Link Intersect. There are many different referral services out there, but apart from the sites that are ranking in your market, these are the ones you want to launch for the US. Many of them feed their data to other websites and are generally considered the most important references.
- Key US overall:
- Data Excel
- Locals.
- Square
- Other big players:
- Google My Business
- Bang.
- Apple Maps
- یلپ۔
- Yellow pages
- Dun & Brad Street.
- Tom tom
6. Follow other local link opportunities.
These are links to other websites focused on your area. There are many different opportunities if you search for them, and I will do a follow up article with the process of finding them.
For now, I will list a few opportunities:
- Colleges or universities (e.g., job postings, scholarships, club sponsorships, discounts, alumni links)
- City related sites and directories.
- Local news, magazines and podcasts.
- Some sites focus on the state or surrounding areas.
- Local community groups (such as Reddit, Facebook groups, Next Door, etc.)
- Sponsorship in general
- Local Awards
7. Claim unconnected dhikr.
An unrelated brand is a place where other sites talk about your company or the people in your company but do not link back to your site. If you are in a position where lawyers or your company and / or people are already active in the community, you will have good luck with this strategy.
8. Buy companies, or at least their websites.
Although it is more rare and circumstantial, integration and acquisition take place locally. Sometimes you may find a company that is selling their existing website or allowing one of their domains to expire. By getting them, you have the option of having two ranking sites or a site that ranks better. These opportunities are rare at the local level and I have only been able to do so a few times in my career but it is extremely valuable if you can find such an opportunity.
9. Add internal links.
Your site is also a local site and you control it. Internal links are a powerful link building strategy. Check out our guide to finding these link opportunities
